First Day of O’Neal!
September 17, 2013 by Woody
The O’Neal School 7th grade has arrived! The group rolled in at noon sharp for a beautiful, cool fall day up here in the mountains. The energy off of the bus was infectious and in short order, the whole class was running on our athletic field, playing some warm up games before getting introduced to their home for the next several days. After moving in to their cabins, the students inhaled a lunch of chicken fajitas and then met their activity groups and two High Rocks leaders for the week.
Two hours after arrival, students were working through group obstacles on our low ropes challenge course, confronting fears (and having a blast!) on our High Ropes, and exploring local stream ecology on the Little River in DuPont State Forest. The reports from each group all reflected the same positive attitudes and excitable nature that these students seem to exude. Cold river water and wobbly wires strung fifty feet in the air did nothing to slow them down!
The first round of activities was followed by an hour of free time spent in camp in canoes, our gym, tennis courts, or the gaga ball hexagon. Dinner afterwards was another enthusiastic feeding affair that saw an impressive amount of noodles, and even some salad, consumed in less than thirty minutes. Now the whole class is off to a corn maze for the evening before back for snack, a nightly thought, and shower time in the cabins.
I hope you enjoy these pictures from the day. We will be taking plenty more tomorrow and will keep the reports coming. This group already seems like it will take full advantage of our program and should provide plenty of action shots and hilarity for you at home!
See you back here tomorrow night.
